SCIATICA

Sciatica is a frequent reason for visiting a chiropractor. Symptoms may include:

  • low back pain radiating to the buttock, back and side of the thigh, calf and/or a foot
  • pins and needles (paresthesia) in the legs
  • numbness
  • muscle weakness or troubles walking.

The most common cause of sciatica is a disc bulge compressing the nerve root exiting the spine.

However, sometimes similar symptoms of back pain and leg or buttock pain may be caused by other conditions like sacroiliac joint dysfunction, piriformis syndrome, facet joint syndrome. In most cases chiropractic treatment is very effective. However, if leg pain and low back pain are caused by a large disc bulge confirmed on MRI or a CT scan, a surgical consultation may be necessary. In our clinic we will be able to decide which type of treatment is most suitable for each of our patients.
